A guitar-shaped hotel, 450 feet tall
O Guitar Hotel at the Seminole Hard Rock is literally that: two giant guitars back to back, 450 feet tall, strings lit at night and a light and water show out front. It's the most photographed building in South Florida after the Miami art deco, and it's twenty minutes from the airport.
Inside there's a casino open 24 hours, a pool with an artificial beach and a concert hall. You don't have to sleep there to go in — and at night the whole building turns into a lit instrument.

A restaurant from 1928 you can only reach by boat
O Cap’s Place is on an island in Lighthouse Point and has no road: you park at the marina, take the house launch and cross over. It was a rum-running spot during Prohibition and a casino afterwards. Churchill and Roosevelt had dinner there, at the same table. The floor is crooked, the fish is fresh and the crossing takes five minutes.
In town, the Floridian has been serving on Las Olas since 1937, 24 hours a day, e o Mai-Kai, a Polynesian tiki bar from 1956, reopened in 2024 after a renovation of more than US$ 20 million — with gardens, torches and a fire show.

Tolls in the region
Fort Lauderdale shares the South Florida network with Miami: I-95 Express, the Sawgrass Expressway and the Turnpike, almost all of them camera only. Going through without a transponder turns into a fine, and the fine costs far more than the toll. All our cars have a transponder.

What to do
The A1A, with the sea beside you the whole way
I-95 gets you there fast. The A1A takes you along the edge: sea on one side, houses on the other, drawbridges that stop traffic when a sailboat goes through. Same distance, different speed.
Heading north, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea has the only reef in the region a few yards off the sand — you can swim out to it with a mask, no boat. Then comes Delray Beach, with Atlantic Avenue running straight down to the sea, and Palm Beach, with Worth Avenue and the oceanfront houses. Fifty minutes, at most.
And to the west, twenty minutes away, Butterfly World — the largest butterfly aviary in the world, with thousands of them loose in greenhouses you walk through.
